The client's pain point here was the north facing aspect that meant shade led to a muddy lawn and narrow borders that felt stark and underwhelming.

The client wants more privacy and space for relaxing and entertaining, and retain enough openness for two kids to mess about.

The concept is a city woodland sanctuary.

This concept reframes the perceived weakness of shade as something to lean into and lead the overall atmosphere of seclusion. It also directs the planting choices that will feel cohesive. The proportion of planting will be more generous which will create a more enveloping space that for adults to relax in and kids to explore.

Existing plant and hard materials are being repurposed where possible, including the use of a felled tree as a log pile habitat in a shady corner.

Our concept creates a year round sanctuary. We carefully mapped out pathways and engaging spaces that invite residents to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy outdoor activities for 52 weeks in the year.

A romantic, meandering design concept for a large

A romantic, meandering design concept for a large residential estate. The wandering lines within the courtyards add scale and depth to counter the rigid formality imposed by the housing walls. Planting balances looseness with structure to create private pockets within a space designated for multiple residents. The twinkling whites and yellows of the flowers were inspired by the nearby candle light of a neighbouring cathedral. The hazy glow is designed to attract people and pollinators.
